9 ways to go green for St. Patrick's Day
Americans love to celebrate holidays from other countries — especially those of countries that are the ancestral homes of many U.S. citizens. St. Patrick’s Day may the top of the list of such beloved celebrations. But you don’t have to have a grandmother from the Emerald Isle to appreciate this festive holiday. Give your home an Irish touch with these decorating tips:

1. Go green in florals. Sometimes the best greenery is simply that — greenery. Try filling vases with fresh leaves and branches. Or, go with green flowers like that favorite, and oh so apropos example: lanky stems of Bells of Ireland.

2. Paint a room green. Green has come a long way from the days when avocado appliances were all the rage. There’s a whole palette of greens available now that feel soothing to vibrant. Choose mint, celery and sage for a calming effect, or rock a room in trendy lime or chartreuse.

3. Go green in the kitchen. A salad doesn’t have to be the only green thing in the kitchen. Try painting your cabinets green. It’s calming and will give the space a fresh, vibrant feel. Try shades like Fresh Cut Grass or Sherwood Green by Benjamin Moore (benjaminmoore.com).

4. Take a seat in green. Not daring enough to paint a whole room green? Just add a spot o’ the green with a green slipper chair that looks good with almost any style of decor ($89, Deco Solid Green slipper chair, Wayfair.com).

5. Using a free printable template, cut out 10-inch felt shamrocks. Use whip stitches or fabric glue to attach the segments to each other and you’ve got a striking holiday runner. Double the size of the shamrocks for St. Pat’s placemats.

6. Plant some shamrocks. Also known as oxalis, shamrock plants come in shades from pale green to deep purple. They sport dainty white or pink blooms and will make a bright addition to your garden. Oxalis can also be grown indoors by a sunny window.

7. Walking on green. Bring the look and feel of fresh green grass indoors with Green Market Resort’s rectangle green rug that evokes grass but doesn’t need mowing ($108, lowes.com).

8. Think vibrant shades. Kelly green isn’t the only bright green on the block. Look at colors like Neon Lime by Benjamin Moore. Check out Sherwin-Williams’ Jitterbug Jade for a fresh take on teal or Center Stage for a new shade of green with a lemon twist.

9. Take it to the plate. A touch of green in your dishes could even make your meal look healthier! Try Waverly’s green and ivory paisley dinnerware set for a pretty green table ($65, Overstock.com). For unbreakable dishes and style, go for Pier 1’s Trellis dinnerware. Made in melamine, it’s a great look indoors or on the patio (pier1.com).
